- If you encounter program termination with an error code ( i.e. Exception
- 0001 ), you have one of the following problems:
-
- 0001 : Memory Allocation Error : There is not enough available memory to
- run BACKLASH. BACKLASH requires 500k free conventional memory and
- 750k available extended or expanded memory. Refer to the MS-DOS manual
- for information on making more memory available.
-
- 0002 : Missing Resource File : A file required by the program is missing.
- Re-install the software to fix the problem. If that does not fix the
- problem, get a new copy of the release.
-
- 0010 : Corrupted Resource File : The contents of one of the files has
- been corrupted. Re-install the software to fix the problem. If that
- does not fix the problem, get a new copy of the release.
-
- Other error numbers indicate an internal problem that can only be fixed
- by updating the software.

- Configuring a Sound Card
- ----------- - ----- ----

- BACKLASH only supports 100% SoundBlaster compatible sound cards. Some cards
- require special configuration in order to set up "SoundBlaster Compatibility
- Mode". Refer to the sound card documentation for more details.
-
- An improperly configured sound card can cause a variety of problems.
-
- Problem : No sound, no music.
- Fix : Make sure that the software is set up to use a sound card.
-
- Problem : No sound, music works.
- Fix : Make sure that the software is set up to use the sound card as
- a sound effects device. Verify that the base address configured
- for the sound card is correct.
-
- Problem : Sound plays then stops, music works
- Fix : The interrupt channel for the sound card is not correct.
- Determine the proper interrupt channel for the sound card
- configuration and reconfigure the sound card using the set up
- program.

- Problem : No sound, no music, program "locks"
- Fix : The DMA channel for the sound card is not correct. Determine
- the proper DMA channel for the sound card configuration and
- reconfigure the sound card using the set up program.

- may be useful in determining the conflicts with the machine configuration.

- BACKLASH supports FM music synthesis on
- AdLib compatible sound cards. Most
- cards, including any 100% Sound Blaster
- compatible cards, support AdLib music.

- BACKLASH supports digital sound effects

- indicated by the BLASTER environment
- variable, or the default value.

- BACKLASH requires at least 500k of
- available DOS conventional memory. Run
- "MEM" from the command line and refer
- to the largest executable program size
- to determine if the required memory is
- available.

- BACKLASH also requires 750k of XMS 2.0
- extended memory OR an equivalent amount
- of EMS 3.2 expanded memory. Refer to
- the DOS manual if the requirements are
- not available.

- BACKLASH requires a 386, 486 or Pentium
- processor. A VGA or compatible video
- card is also required.

- A joystick is optional and support for
- 4 button joysticks ( eg: Gravis Game
- Pad ) is supplied.

- A Microsoft compatible mouse is also
- optional but recommended.

- If you are sick of this technical
- mumbo-jumbo, you could be playing
- SLACKMAN. Press <ALT-F10> from the
- main menu.

- The program was unable to execute
- the BACKLASH game program BL.EXE.
- The file BL.EXE must be in the same
- directory as the setup program and
- that directory must be the current
- working directory.

- Try leaving the configuration program
- and running BACKLASH from the command
- line. Enter BL.EXE at the command
- prompt.
